An Experimental Study about the Effect of Nicotine and Prednisolone on Open Wound Healing in Rabbits
Kim Hyun-Young

Kim Han-Jung
Abstract
This experiment was designed to study the effects of nicotine and prednisolone acetate in wound healing.

The rabbit ear was selected as the wound model. The author had divided 15 matured rabbits into 3 groups. They are Group 1 served as controls, Group 2 were given nicotine 2mg/kg/day(IM), Group 3 prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day(IM). Wound contracture and epithelization were measured by planimetry of sterile tracing paper taken every other day. The outline of the wound was traced as accurately as possible on a superimposed sheet of tracing paper. The outline was then transferred directly to sheet of graph and the area within it was counted.

Finally the following 2 results had been obtained.

1) Nicotine impairs wound contraction in the rabbit ear model from the 6th to the 14th day of wound healing. However, the wounds contracted at essentially the same rate up to day 6 and from the 15th to the 20th day in the experimental and control groups of animals.

2) Prednisolone acetate decreased the total amount of contraction and rate of epithelization.
